In the previous two articles centered on United States investment, we discussed the nation's stock market and treasury bonds. This article provides information for individual foreign investors in the US.

Foreign Investment in the U.S.

U.S. non-resident aliens are citizens of other countries who live in the United States. If you are one, then here’s good news – you can have US-based investments such as stocks for as long as you want! Even if you leave the country, you still own and control these investments. However, you’ll need to pay attention to taxation rules, as you’re going to deal with the US Internal Revenue Service (IRS), the agency that collects taxes and enforces tax laws. (The Investment FAQ has a detailed page on this matter.)

According to the US Department of Treasury:

The United States has traditionally welcomed Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) and provided foreign investors fair, equitable and nondiscriminatory treatment with few limited exceptions designed to protect national security.

However, foreign investors should be aware of the Exon-Florio Provision, which provides a mechanism to review and restrict (if found to be necessary by the US President) foreign direct investment that threatens US national security (link).

Another helpful website for foreign investors would be WorkPermit.com, which has a page on the US immigration guide for foreign investors and US immigration application forms.
